The Emotional Truth
You know what flow feels like—that absorbed, effortless focus where studying just clicks. Csikszentmihalyi called it the psychology of optimal experience. But flow isn't magic. It's what happens when all three cognitive accounts are simultaneously healthy.
Attention fully invested. Memory challenged but not overloaded. Energy sufficient for sustained effort.
Flow breaks the moment a distraction forces an attention withdrawal, complexity exceeds memory capacity, or energy runs out mid-session. So the question isn't "how do I get into flow?"—it's "how do I keep all three accounts balanced?"

The Budgeted Session (A Concrete Tuesday Example)
Grade 7 Science, Cell Biology, Tuesday 4:30–5:00 pm. Phase 1 (2 min): Pre-session account check—"Did I just switch tasks? Is my mind full? Did I eat?" Phase 2 (12 min): Three 4-minute retrieval chunks, each within working memory capacity. Phase 3 (3 min): Energy break—stand up, walk, no phone. Phase 4 (8 min): Connection questions that combine chunks (scheduled after the break when energy is refreshed). Phase 5 (5 min): Close-out—"Which chunk was hardest? When did I drift? How's my energy now?" Session ends with reserve in all three accounts.

Run the Loop (10 minutes)
Try this tonight—the Budgeted Mini-Session:
-
Account check (1 min): Rate Attention, Memory, Energy each 1–5. If any is below 2, postpone hard material.
-
Single-chunk retrieval (4 min): One topic. Write 3 questions. Answer from memory. Check against notes.
-
Connection question (3 min): Write one "how" or "why" question that links this chunk to something you already know. Answer it.
-
Close-out (2 min): "What's my hardest gap? When's my next session?" Schedule it. Walk away with accounts intact.
Output: 3 retrieval questions + 1 connection + next session scheduled. More learning per minute, zero overdrafts.
