The Emotional Truth
"I understand it when I read it, but I can't explain it."
That's the gap between recognition and ownership. Your child can nod along to the explanation. They can highlight the right lines. They can even answer a multiple-choice question by elimination.
But ask them to teach it to someone else? Suddenly the words don't come. Because recognizing isn't the same as owning.

The Proof Protocol: Elaborative Processing
Explaining in simple language forces you to connect ideas, define terms, and make the logic coherent. Gaps become obvious because vague understanding can't survive a clear explanation. Research calls this "elaborative processing"—building a mental model, not just storing words. Think of it as compiling your code: if it doesn't run when you try to explain it, you've found the bug. The Feynman Technique says: if you can explain it to a 10-year-old, you truly understand it. If you can't, you know exactly where to dig deeper.
